What Is an XML Sitemap?

An XML sitemap is a file that lists all the important pages on your website, helping search engines like Google discover and crawl your content efficiently. It includes metadata such as when a page was last modified, how often it changes, and its relative priority within the site.

How to Use Your Sitemap

After generating your sitemap, upload it to the root of your website (e.g., https://example.com/sitemap.xml). Then submit it in Google Search Console under "Sitemaps" so Google knows where to find it. You can also reference it in your robots.txt file with a Sitemap directive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an XML sitemap?

While not strictly required, an XML sitemap is highly recommended for any site with more than a handful of pages. It is especially important for new sites, large sites, sites with poor internal linking, or sites that are frequently updated.

What does the priority value mean?

Priority is a hint to search engines about the relative importance of pages within your site, ranging from 0.0 to 1.0. It does not affect how your site ranks against other sites. Most webmasters set the homepage to 1.0 and lower-priority pages to 0.5 or below.

How many URLs can a sitemap contain?

A single XML sitemap can contain up to 50,000 URLs and must not exceed 50 MB (uncompressed). If your site has more URLs, you can split them across multiple sitemaps and reference them from a sitemap index file.
